Oncology Series: Foundations of Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant Nursing

The 2025 Spring Oncology Series is two sessions focused on enhancing the knowledge in caring for the oncology patient. This first session provides an evidence-based introduction to foundational concepts including caring for the psychological needs of oncology patients, utilizing palliative care for symptom management, and understanding the foundational concepts of hematological malignancies and blood and marrow transplant patient care. The target audience for this course are experienced RNs who are either new to oncology nursing or are looking to enhance their knowledge and skills in the oncology setting. By the end of this course, the learner will increase their knowledge regarding the effect implicit bias has on cancer care and the different types of hematological malignancies, common treatment plans, and how to support the oncology patient’s psychological needs. Lastly, the learner will increase their knowledge in the care of blood and marrow transplant patients, be able to describe the rationale for treatment plans, and discuss pre-transplant eligibility, the infusion of their transplant, and the clinical outcomes. By the end of the course, 65% of participants will self-report an increase knowledge of nursing management of hematological malignancies and state ways to apply knowledge to nursing practice. You are required to watch at least 75% of the video, pass the post-test, and complete the Evaluation to attain a CE Certificate.? The passing score is 80%. There are 3 attempts for the post-test.

1. Describe how implicit bias can affect the care of an oncology patient and identify strategies to mitigate implicit bias.
2. Discuss nursing management of hematological malignancies and state 3 ways to apply knowledge to nursing practice.
