Overview

This lecture will provide a comprehensive overview of self-compassion, emphasizing how to better care for yourself to enhance the ability to care for others. Participants will develop a thorough understanding of how to practice self-kindness during challenging patient interactions, cultivate a sense of shared humanity by openly discussing experiences of struggle and vulnerability with colleagues, and engage in mindfulness exercises that promote non-judgmental awareness of thoughts and feelings related to work stress and patient care. By the conclusion of this session, Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) will be empowered with essential strategies to incorporate self-compassion into their practice, enabling them to thrive in a high-stress healthcare environment.


ANCC Learning Outcomes

65% of participants will self-report that they are equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to engage in more mindful medical practice.

Learning Objectives


  1. Describe how to engage in mindfulness exercises at least once a day.
  2. Discuss after challenging patient encounters, how to practice self-kindness by reflecting on the experience without self-criticism.
  3. Recognize the potential impact and consequences of implicit bias when evaluating a patient who presents with a chronic illness, and practice self-compassion by recognizing that biases can arise from personal experiences and societal influences.
