Overview
This course focuses on the surgical interventions used in the treatment of cardiothoracic disease. Participants will get a glimpse of some of the new procedures that are found in the larger medical centers such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement, valvular reconstruction, emergency treatment of aortic dissection and mechanical circulatory support as well as an overview of the basics of cardiac surgery.

  1. Discuss the components of Cardiopulmonary Bypass.
  2. Describe the indications for percutaneous aortic valve repair vs. open repair.
  3. Discuss pharmacological management in the CVICU.
  4. Identify purpose and components of Extracorporeal Membrane.
  5. Identify purpose and components of Extracorporeal MembraneOxygenation (ECMO).
