2022 Controlled Substances and Beyond: The Pain Puzzle, A Comprehensive Review

The Center for Advanced Practice is proud to offer an advanced practice program geared toward prescribing providers that focuses on the principles of pharmacology across the lifespan in relation to Schedule II-V controlled substances. The course explores assessment, treatment, management, evaluation, and standardized procedures and protocols of controlled substances, with an emphasis on Schedule II.  Additionally, the course will review the legal and prescribing aspects associated with pain management as well as misuse, abuse, drug diversion, controlled substances in the pediatric population, and ethical considerations. This is an all-day program with a spectacular advanced practice faculty.

This course meets the California Code of Regulations Sections 1399.610 and 1399.612 requirements.

1. Describe how implicit bias may impact pain management and discuss ethical strategies that the provider can use to minimize their effect in the clinical setting.
2. Identify and examine the diagnosis and management of common disorders, including but not limited to acute pain, chronic pain, ADHD, addiction/substance use disorders; that may require CS II-V management as well as the provision of appropriate patient/provider education regarding controlled substances (CS II-V) across the lifespan, in a patient-specific/specialty protocol or practice by the Business and Profession Code, Section 2836.1.
3. Discuss the spectrum of treatment options available for pain management, including comparing efficacy and safety profiles that influence the selection, usage, clinical rationale for use, and conversion of pharmacological agents.
4. Analyze state laws and federal regulations on furnishing, dispensing, and administering controlled substances Schedule II-V for nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
