Research Primer: Essential Elements of a Research Study

This course will introduce learners to the topic of research. It is designed to equip learners with knowledge and skills in planning, designing and implementing research studies. By the end of the course, the attendee will have gained knowledge about how to begin the research process. The target audience of this course include all level healthcare providers who want to learn more about the process of designing, conducting, and implementing research studies. This course covers the following topics: 1. How to conduct literature database search using resources at Lane Library. 2. How to read research articles and identify gaps in the literature. 3. How to formulate research questions. Understand different research designs including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods. 4. Understand the key concepts of data collection and management. 5. Discuss ethical principles and regulatory compliance and guidance information to protect human research participants. After successfully finishing this course, you will be required to achieve a score of 75% or above on a post-test in order to earn your Continuing Education (CE) credits.

1. Formulate focused research questions and purpose
2. Examine how implicit biases affects the research process
3. Demonstrate how to do literature search using electronic databases at Lane Library
4. Demonstrate how to read scientific research articles
5. Select the appropriate research design based on research questions
6. Explain how to collect and store data and protect research participants
7. Discuss key human participant research ethics, compliance, and conduct concepts and requirements
8. Practice implementation of research process
