Overview
This is an all day course that covers types of vascular access devices, vascular anatomy, infusate characteristics that affect device selection, maintenance care components, and complication management. Nurses in all settings, whether inpatient, ambulatory infusion or home infusion, can benefit from an up-to-date understanding of the how to manage these devices and prevent or manage complications. Implicit bias considerations will be woven into various sections to insure that clinicians are mindful and tailor their communications and care for the most effective vascular access for patients across cultural, racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, gender, intellect and age ranges.

ANCC Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify and discuss how our implicit bias can affect health care outcomes for patients and patient satisfaction with their care and devices.
  2. Identify the various types of vascular access devices, their characteristics, indications, and contraindications, and patient anatomic considerations.
  3. List the 4 sources of Central Line Associated BloodStream Infections (CLABSI), and discuss their pathogenesis.
  4. Describe how to safely remove a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC).
