APP Grand Rounds January 2025 - Bringing Virtual Reality to Nurses to Treat Chronic Abdominal Pain

This lecture will provide an overview of current topics relevant to patient care, specifically focusing on the role of virtual reality in treatment. It will also address why opioid medications are not suitable for treating chronic abdominal pain in patients with gut-brain interaction disorders. By the end of the session, APPs will be able to apply knowledge learned in this presentation to identify at least three disorders that affect the gut-brain interaction and connection.

1. Identify and define presence and immersion in virtual reality.
2. Describe and explain why opioid medications are contraindicated for chronic abdominal pain in patients with diseases of gut-brain interaction.
3. Acknowledge the potential impact and consequences of implicit bias when evaluating a patient who presents with chronic abdominal pain.
