Overview
The 2024 Fall Oncology Series is a collection of three sessions focused on enhancing the knowledge in caring for the oncology patient. It is broken into two pathways: Hematology/Oncology Nursing and Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT)/Cancer Cellular Therapy (CCT) Nursing. This session is for the Hematology/Oncology Nursing pathways and provides an evidence-based information on solid tumors, nursing management of oncology-related complications, and structural and metabolic oncologic emergencies. The target audience for this course are experienced RNs who are new to oncology nursing and working on a hematology/oncology unit. By the end of this course, the learner will increase their knowledge in structural and metabolic oncologic emergencies, solid tumors, and the nursing management of oncology patients. They will also be able to describe how implicit bias may affect oncology patients in the inpatient setting and list strategies to mitigate implicit bias.

ANCC Learning Outcomes

65% of participants will self-report an increased knowledge of solid tumors and oncology complication management and state ways to apply knowledge to nursing practice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. By the end of the class, the learner will be able to identify common signs and symptoms of solid tumor cancers.
  2. By the end of the session, the learner will be able to describe how implicit bias may affect the nursing care of oncology patients and list strategies to mitigate implicit bias.
  3. By the end of the session, the learner will be able to identify structural and metabolic complications in oncology populations and discuss various treatment options.
