Overview
Caring for oncology patients is a unique and specialized area of nursing. The target audience for this course are experienced nurses who are either new to oncology nursing or those who are looking to enhance their knowledge and skills in the oncology setting. It is important they understand certain foundational concepts including caring for the psychological needs of oncology patients, understanding the foundational concepts of hematological malignancies, transfusion support services, and blood and marrow transplant patient care. By the end of this course, the attendee will gain knowledge in understanding implicit bias and how it affects cancer care, common psychological experiences of oncology patients, the different types of hematological malignancies, their workup options, and common treatment plans as well as how to support patients’ transfusion needs. Lastly, attendees will gain knowledge in caring for blood and marrow transplant patients by describing the rationale for different treatment plans as well as pre-transplant eligibility, the infusion of their transplant, and the clinical outcomes.

ANCC Learning Outcomes
  1. Describe how implicit bias can affect the care of an oncology patient.
  2. State they can apply knowledge of hematological malignancies from this session to their oncology nursing practice.
