ANCC Learning Outcomes

Learners will have a knowledge of standardized catheter care, diagnostic stewardship, and strategies to reduce infection risks from indwelling urinary catheters.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) according to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) guidelines, including the criteria for diagnosis and reporting.
  2. State the significance of CAUTI in healthcare settings, including its prevalence, associated risks, and impact on patient outcomes and healthcare costs.
  3. Identify best practices for urine collection in patients with indwelling urinary catheters, emphasizing techniques that minimize contamination and ensure accurate diagnostic results.
  4. Identify and describe evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions that can be implemented to decrease the incidence of CAUTI, including catheter care protocols, staff education, and patient engagement strategies.
  5. Explain how to apply device and diagnostic stewardship principles in clinical practice to optimize the use of indwelling urinary catheters and reduce the risk of CAUTI.
  6. Describe how implicit bias may impact patient assessments, particularly in the diagnosis of urinary tract infections, and discuss strategies that healthcare providers can implement to minimize its effects in the clinical setting.
