Overview

By the end of this session, the clinical nurse will have a better understanding of how to prepare and respond to man-made and natural disasters, with the goal of mitigating death and disability from such events. Hands-on skills in disaster triage and improvisational trauma management will reinforce learning concepts and help the learner gain confidence and ability to respond confidently to mass casualty events, regardless of nursing background. Participants will gain a better understanding of epidemiological trends of disasters, the role of nurses in disasters, the disaster management cycle, personal preparedness in disasters, Chemical/Biological/Radiological/Explosive (CBRNE) event identification and treatment, management of pandemic events, and Stanford Health Care’s institutional plan to prepare for/respond to disasters.

ANCC Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify ways on how to prepare and respond to man-made and natural disasters, with the goal of mitigating death and disability from such events.
  2. Apply disaster response concepts to mass casualty events, regardless of nursing background.
